Sharp's work “ART AS MY MEDITATION” explores his relationship with drawing and the state of meditation he is transported into to create his drawings. Through repeated experiments with drawings, Sharp has become enlightened to certain characteristics that enhance his meditative state. The subject matter plays a significant role in his state of meditation, using his Grandad for this body of work has allowed him to explore locked down emotions, and through the process of drawing has become more self-aware. Sharp states that...
“Through my time drawing, I have been able to connect closer to a recently lost love one. I have realised that I feel very ashamed of myself, and it is from comparison to my Grandad. He was a true gentleman, and I look up to him in life and death. Since his death, I have had an overwhelming feeling of shame. I believe I have not achieved as much as my Grandad, and I am not, as good of a person as he was. He was able to present such an honest and pure love towards his family and others. It was not the love that he received, but what he was able to give. This and many other reasons are why I adore this man so much, but this quality hurts to comprehend. However, through my drawings and analysation of how I connect to in the drawings, I remember that he loved me no matter what and that although I may not feel it, he would be proud no matter what I achieve. Through continuous study and meditation, I was able to understand this. This cultivated in my final drawing of my Grandad when he was the same age as me. I realised that I am still young, and although I have much ambition, I do you have time on my side.”
Sharp can understand his relationship to a recently lost loved one through a drawing of Sharp's Grandad when he was a similar age to that of Sharp at this time. The drawing is accompanied by a video presenting the process Sharp undertakes. With text layered over the video displaying notes taken through the process, it is possible to see into the working of his mind during the creation. Sharp is concerned with art's ability to aid healing and has carried out this theory within this body of work. As a result, he has taken steps to become aware of the process and its benefits.
